Current Events Sweepstakes (CES) is a weekly periodical using news events from the U.S. and around the world in a game format. Each week, categorized questions, carefully selected by an experienced staff of educators, are prepared for an easy-to-play game that involves the whole class. CES is published in two editions - Print and Powerpoint.

Print Edition
The original version of the game, begun in 1968, is a weekly periodical with 100 questions. The questions are organized into ten categories as shown in the illustration below. The Print Edition is available to download and print each week for use in class.

PowerPoint Edition
The newest version of the game, introduced in 2008, is a presentation version with 50 questions, organized into the ten categories shown below. The PowerPoint Edition is designed to use with a computer and projector each week in class.

Special Note on PowerPoint Edition: This edition is published as a PowerPoint slideshow (.pps file). To view it, you must have either Microsoft PowerPoint installed on your computer or a PowerPoint Viewer plug-in (see below). The PowerPoint Viewer is available ONLY for Windows computers. Users with a Mac operating system will need to have the full PowerPoint program installed.

The game features questions in ten categories: National Affairs, War & Peace, Business, the Arts, Science, Social Issues, Foreign Affairs, Politics, Sports and Odds & Ends.

Organization, Rules and Procedures

Suggestions on how to play Current Events Sweepstakes in your classroom are provided in our Organization, Rules and Procedures documents. This includes how to organize the class, rules for conducting the game, and how to score. We've also included a sample seven-week schedule for conducting a competition among the teams in each class.

The Organization, Rules and Procedures document is available in a web page format as well as in Adobe pdf file format. If you'd like to print out a copy for later use, we would suggest downloading the PDF format.
